Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba says the time has come for Malawi’s educated population to use their leadership skills and professional qualifications to develop solutions to the country’s socio-economic challenges.
He made the call in Lilongwe during the launch of Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) Alumni Malawi Chapter.
“Malawi has a pool of educated human capital, and then you wonder why we still face problems such as food insecurity, shortage of forex… and we therefore challenge you to turn your education and professional qualifications into actionable solutions and your ideas into enterprise,“ Namalomba said.
He further challenged the ESAMI alumni to become problem-solvers, entrepreneurs who create opportunities and contribute to the realisation of Malawi 2063.
Namalomba said President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika continues to emphasise unity of purpose in building Malawi.
Namalomba stressed that Malawi’s transformation requires collective efforts from government, the private sector, academia, civil society, technology, agriculture, media and other sectors.
On corruption, Namalomba advised the ESAMI Alumni to remain ethical, saying corruption is an anchor which weighs down the strides made in development.
He appealed to the alumni to uphold integrity in the fight against corruption and help address emerging challenges, including climate change, cybercrime, human trafficking, economic pressures and artificial intelligence.
Director General for ESAMI Professor Peter Kiuluku said there is a need for ESAMI alumni to demonstrate exceptional leadership at every level of the economy and make good use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The theme for the launch was Reconnecting Excellence: From Learning to Leading.
