Malawi concludes China – Africa Economic Trade Expo 2024 with strong Trade and Investment gains

Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) has wrapped up its participation in the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE 2024), marking a significant milestone in deepening trade and investment ties between Malawi and China.

Held in Changsha, Hunan Province, the expo provided a dynamic platform for Malawi to showcase its agricultural exports, mineral wealth, and cultural craftsmanship.

According to MITC Director General, Kruger Phiri, MITC’s presence at the event has yielded tangible commercial outcomes and laid the groundwork for long-term strategic partnerships.

The Key Outcomes from Malawi’s participation include advancements in agro-processing, strong demand for agricultural products resulting in confirmed orders for: 100,000 Metric Tons (MT) of soya beans, 30,000 MT of groundnuts, 10,000 MT of dried chillies, an open-ended contract for macadamia nuts and promising discussions for sorghum supply.

Phiri says MITC has also recorded gemstone sales that have exceeded expectations at the expo, adding that Malawi’s mineral offerings attracted robust attention from global buyers, with notable deals including 30 MT of amethyst, 1,000 MT of milky quartz and an open-ended sourcing agreement for Mica.

“The success highlighted the untapped potential of Malawi’s mining sector and the value of international market access. This is a milestone towards Malawi’s economic transformation,” he said.

The Expo has further resulted in global recognition of Malawian arts & craft, with a record of over 5 tons of inquiries for handmade arts and craft, plus a heightened investor interest.

Meanwhile, the Malawi pavilion at the expo has attained permanent presence in China as a strategic hub for promoting Malawian products.
