Learners at Mtengula Primary School in Likoma have benefitted from a newly constructed school block worth K22 million, funded through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
Mervis Mwale, a Standard Eight learner at the school, said the construction of the school block has alleviated challenges the students previously faced, such as exposure to airborne diseases.
“Before the school block was built, many of us were at risk of contracting airborne diseases like cough due to overcrowded classrooms, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The noise in our temporary classrooms also made it difficult to hear our teachers,” said Mwale.
Joel Kagunda, another beneficiary, expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, noting that the new facilities have positively impacted student attendance and performance, especially among the boys.
The school’s Headteacher Fyton Nyondo shared his appreciation for the new school block which includes two classrooms.
“Previously, due to the shortage of classrooms, some learners had to attend classes in the afternoon, which affected their performance. Teachers struggled to focus and couldn’t teach effectively under those conditions,” said Nyondo.
Mtengula Primary School serves learners from Chinyanya, Mainja, Mtengula, and Madimba areas.
