Malawi and Mozambique have signed an agreement for a Simplified Trade Regime (STR) which seeks to boost small-scale cross-border trade.
Malawi’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Sosten Gwengwe said the agreement will smooth customs procedures, empowering small-scale traders to conduct business without hurdles.
Mozambique’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Silvino Augusto José Moreno, notes that the memorandum of understanding will support and facilitate small-scale cross-border trade by providing simplified clearance mechanisms for goods at borders.
According to Moreno this will promote free movement of people and goods, enhancing economic performance and transformation in both countries.
The agreement aligns with Malawi and Mozambique’s commitments under regional and international agreements, including the SADC Protocol on Trade and the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.
