Farmers from Nkhate Irrigation Scheme in Chikwawa have encouraged their counterparts at Tsenjerani Irrigation Scheme in Neno to approach farming as a business in order to diversify their income and maximize the potential of the scheme.
Speaking on Friday during a learning visit by Tsenjerani farmers at Nkhate Irrigation Scheme, the Board of Trustees Secretary, Timothy Manyiwa emphasized that the era of farming solely for consumption is over urging the farmers to focus on farming for profit to boost their income.
Neno District Irrigation Officer, Austin Ndengu explained that the visit was organized to help Neno farmers learn from the experiences of their colleagues in Chikwawa.
“The aim was to share knowledge on irrigation scheme management, organization, marketing, and irrigation development among other important aspects,” Ndengu said.
Neno District Council with financial support from the Malawi Watershed Improvement Services Project (MWASIP) is constructing Tsenjerani Irrigation Scheme at Mkulumadzi Extension Planning Area in Traditional Authority Dambe.
