Junior Queens have a bright future — Chakwera

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera believe that the Junior Queens have a promising future in the sport of netball.

The team recently qualified for the World Netball Youth Cup in Gibraltar in 2025 after securing a silver medal in the qualifiers held in South Africa.

President Chakwera, in a statement, said the team’s qualification is an encouragement for them to strive for even greater achievements.

Dr Chakwera praised the team’s resilience and skills, saying that they have showcased Malawi’s immense potential on the international stage and raised the national flag high.

The team arrived in the country on March 25, 2024, at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

Isaac Chimwala, General Secretary for the Netball Association of Malawi, expressed excitement about the team’s achievement.

Chimwala said the team needs support to bring the cup home. This is the first time in 16 years that the team has qualified for the tournament.

During the qualifiers, Malawi secured second place, losing only to South Africa with a score of 44-19.

They achieved victories against Tanzania (64-24), Kenya (42-39), Zambia (54-35), and a narrow win against Zimbabwe (42-41).
