Implementation of water security framework, key in addressing environmental degradation

Effective implementation of the Climate Resilience Water Security Framework under the Catchment-Based Climate Resilient Water Security Project in Northern Malawi developed by the Northern Region Water Board is said to be key in addressing water and environmental challenges affecting the country.

Speaking during a dissemination conference in Karonga, Chief Executive Officer for the Northern Region Water Board, Francis Munthali, said the strategy is tailored to strengthen the resilience and water security of communities, particularly women and youth, in the targeted districts of Rumphi, Nkhatabay and Chitipa.

Commenting on the strategy, Deputy Director of Water Resources in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, Sidney Kamtukule, said the Ministry will coordinate and promote participation of different stakeholders in the implementation stages to achieve the recommendations made in the Water Security Framework at the national level.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary councils. Director of Administration at Chitipa District Council, Clement Gonthi, assured the stakeholders that they will strengthen community participation programs to promote climate-resilient soil and water conservation technologies and knowledge-sharing on the integration of climate resilience into water security and water-related shocks.

National, Regional and District stakeholders working in the agriculture, water and other related sectors attended the conference.

Ending this year, the two-year project is being funded by the African Development Bank to the tune of 760,000 US Dollars.
