Iceland expands support for Home-Grown School Meals in Malawi

The World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with Malawi’s Ministry of Education and the Government of Iceland, has expanded the Home-Grown School Meals (HGSM) Programme to Nkhotakota District.

Through the programme Iceland  committs $1.5 million (approximately K2.6 billion) over three years to provide daily nutritious meals to 10,000 primary school learners, enhancing both education and food security in the district.

WFP Acting Country Director, Simon Denhere, emphasised the programme’s significance, noting  that it benefits not only learners but also farmers and agro-dealers in surrounding communities.

“Thanks to Iceland’s support, we can reach more children with nutritious meals while also creating opportunities for farmers to strengthen their livelihoods,” said Denhere.

Iceland’s Head of Mission, David Bjarnason, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the school feeding programme, indicating the link between nutrition and learning.

“A well-fed child is a better learner. Investing in school meals is an investment in human capital and sustainable development. When more children attain quality education, they become responsible citizens and future leaders of the nation,” said Bjarnason.

Deputy Director for School Health, Nutrition, HIV, and AIDS, Maureen Maguza-Tembo, underscored the programme’s impact, saying:

“Expanding the Home-Grown School Meals Programme strengthens both education and local food systems. This is one of the key initiatives that need to be scaled up in other districts.”

The initiative supports 1,200 local farmers who supply agricultural produce, boosting their economic profile. Additionally, it promotes climate-friendly cooking solutions and builds on the programme’s success in Mangochi, reinforcing sustainable development in Malawi.
