‘I chose development over politics’

Recently-appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Benedicto Chambo, has pointed out that he chose to support the Chakwera-led administration over opposition politics after being impressed with the numerous development initiatives that Capital Hill has lined up for his area.

Speaking to MBC Digital, chambo said his working relationship with MCP government officially started on 16 October, 2023 at a developmental rally where President Dr Lazarus Chakwera launched construction works for Makanjira Maternity Wing in Mangochi.

He was later included in the entourage for the presidential trip to Saudi Arabia, where the President signed funding for the construction of Mangochi-Makanjira Road together with Traditional Authority Makanjira.

“I thought about the development projects that I stood to benefit if I worked with the ruling party and realised that there is nothing the opposition is going to offer me and my area,” stated Chambo.

The parliamentarian would soon start supporting government agendas in Parliament and patronising development rallies organized by the president and the ruling party.

In turn, the MCP started recognizing Chambo in various political platforms as a guest speaker, a thing which helped cement further his blossoming relationship with the government.

“I started appearing in development rallies to show my appreciation for the development projects taking place in my area.  I am happy that the president saw potential in me and entrusted me to work with him as deputy cabinet minister, a thing which also excited the people of Makanjira,” he said.

He said supporting government ideologies will work to his advantage.

“The major projects such as Makanjira road, the water project, the hospital project, the secondary school at Lulanga and many other projects compelled me to support government so that these crucial projects see light at the end of the day,” he added.

Senior chiefs Makanjira and Lulanga hailed the good working relationship that exists between their legislator and the government, especially President Chakwera for recognizing Chambo’s potential.

They believe having Chambo and Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, who also comes from Mangochi, in Cabinet, will to work their advantage as the their area has been lagging behind in terms of development.

“When the President announced the appointment of Honourable Chambo as a deputy minister, the people of Makanjira and Lulanga rejoiced because we knew that our area has now embraced development. Our main concern is the road from Mangochi to Fort Maguire at Makanjira,” said Senior Chief Lulanga.

Some of the projects currently taking place in the area include a hospital, which is at an advanced stage, a secondary project at Lulanga which is also taking shape, water project and other initiatives which are in the pipeline.

Talking about the forthcoming general elections, Chambo has high hopes that the people of Makanjira and Lulanga will give him another chance to continue developing the area.

“I am a politician and I will always be one, as for the elections, I will follow what the people will decide for me however am optimistic that the people will give me time to complete the projects which I initiated,” he stated.
