Government launches National Development Policy to bolster self-reliance, sustainability

Ministry of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, has launched National Development Policy (2024 – 2029) and the Community Development Month (CDM) Initiative that seeks to bolster self-reliance and sustainability among the citizenry.

Minister responsible, Jean Sendeza launched the policy Thursday at Rukuru Primary School in Mzimba.

Speaking during the ceremony held at Rukuru Primary School in the presence of Traditional Authority (T/A) Khosolo, community leaders, and government officials, Sendeza emphasised the importance of locally-driven development.

“Development thrives when communities take ownership and actively participate in creating solutions. Government policies should not just provide guidelines but inspire action at the grassroots level,” said Sendeza.

The event showcased successful local projects, including the construction of a teacher house and a bridge spearheaded by the local Area and Village Development Committees (ADC/VDC). Sendeza applauded the collaborative spirit demonstrated by villagers who contributed materials, funds, and labour towards the initiatives.

She further urged communities to shift their mindset towards embracing self-help strategies rather than waiting for government or NGO assistance.

“For too long, we’ve misunderstood the essence of freedom as an excuse for inaction. True freedom comes with responsibility to contribute to and sustain our own development,” she said.

M’mbelwa District Council Chairperson, Morgan Tembo, praised the policy, saying, “This initiative provides us with a structured roadmap to address local challenges and ensure no one is left behind.”

The community also constructed a bridge

Moving forward, Sendeza declared that implementation of the policies would begin immediately, with M’mbelwa District Council serving as a model for other regions. She called on all citizens to actively participate in ensuring their success.

“Development is a shared responsibility. Together, we can create a self-reliant and prosperous Malawi,” she concluded.

The newly launched National Community Development Policy is also committed to inclusivity. It aims to combat social injustices by involving vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
