Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF), an official partner of the United Nations Environment Program, has commended Malawi for its exemplary efforts in promoting women’s involvement in climate change solutions and decision-making roles.
This acknowledgement was made during a prize presentation ceremony on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
WECF’s Executive Director, Sascha Gabizon said sustainable development and climate action cannot succeed without integrating gender equity.
She added that the way female delegates represented Malawi at COP29 reflects how women are valued as critical agents of resilience and innovation.
Deputy Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Janet Banda, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“In 2021, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera launched the Women in Climate Action Network to ensure that women take charge of issues that affect them most. This is a sign of seriousness,” she said.
COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, brought together global stakeholders to negotiate on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and financing.
