Female students in the country have been urged to work hard in science subjects for them to take up engineering posts in future.
Acting Gender and Social Inclusion Manager at the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) Ethel Atupele Bvalani has made the plea at Nkula B Hydro Electric Power Station during an educational visit by female students who are in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) camp being held at MUST in Thyolo.
Bvalani said currently EGENCO has a 16 % representation of female employees and mentioned science camps as one of the strategies to inspire more girls to work hard in science subjects and join the company in future.
About 130 girls from community day secondary schools in Form 1 up to Form 3 across the country had an opportunity to tour Nkula B and learn how electricity is produced.
EGENCO operates four HEP stations of Nkula, Tedzani, Kapichira and Wovwe among thermal and solar plants. Nkula power station is the first major hydro power station in Malawi and is currently generating 390.55 megawatts from the hydro power plants.
