President Dr Lazarus Chakwera welcomed at Colombia University [Arkangel Tembo,MANA]
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated his commitment to enhancing food security in Malawi through various initiatives, including infrastructure development and harnessing the expertise of universities.
President Chakwera made the remarks on Saturday at Columbia University during the World Leaders Forum which was tackling the issues of global challenges and cultural perspective.
He noted that universities are key in supporting the government through their research in ending hunger to ensure food security.
“Malawi is doing everything possible to improve food security through irrigation and establishment of mega-farms,” he said.
The President said the Malawi government has made strides to initiate the construction of the Shire Valley Transformation programme which aims to reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture and bolster farming through irrigation.
Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, founder of Food Systems for the Future and former Chief Executive Officer of the World Food Programme, praised Malawi’s strides in addressing food security.
Also present at the event were Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille and Ambassador Cousin, who lauded Malawi’s efforts in improving agricultural systems.
