Chakwera arrives in Kenya for World Bank summit

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in Kenya for the World Bank’s International Development Association – IDA Summit.

President Chakwera arrived in Kenya through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and was welcomed by Malawi’s High Commissioner to Kenya Callista Mutharika, Minister of  Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda among others.

The Malawi leader is expected to deliver a speech showcasing how the effects of climate change such as floods and droughts have affected Malawi’s food security, its resilience, and the resources Malawi needs to keep up with its development agenda.

IDA is one of the largest sources of assistance for the world’s 75 least-developed countries and is the single largest source of donor funds for basic social services in these countries.

The High-level event will therefore accord African leaders, whose countries benefit from various financing instruments of the IDA, an opportunity to discuss an ambitious and robust 21st replenishment of the International Development Association, that would support transformational development objectives of their countries to enable the fight against poverty.

Another objective of the summit is to assert to IDA donors and other partners in the priority areas for development financing in Africa.

Malawi has long been a beneficiary of IDA financing support for various development initiatives including the agriculture sector, health, and social protection interventions.
