Area 3 hikers leads tree-planting drive

In a bid to combat the devastating effects of climate change, Area 3 Hiking Team, led by renowned environmentalist, Mathews Malata, has spearheaded a tree-planting initiative at Bunda Mountain in Lilongwe.

The activity aims to inspire communities to prioritise reforestation and conservation efforts.

Malata, who is also a Youth Champion of Malawi 2063’s Environmental Sustainability Agenda, emphasised the urgent need for action as the country grapples with severe environmental challenges, including deforestation and erratic weather patterns that threaten livelihoods and food security.

“Tree planting is critical, but protecting what we plant is equally important. Educating and involving the community is crucial for safeguarding the trees we plant,” he said.

Malata also called for increased climate financing to help least-developed countries mitigate the impacts of climate change, urging developed nations to honour their commitments to COP29 resolutions.

The team’s coordinator, Mani Kandan, echoed Malata’s sentiments.

Kandani reaffirmed their dedication to giving back to both the community and the environment.

He highlighted the team’s commitment to tree planting as a means of ensuring sustainability for future generations in Malawi.

During the exercise, the Area 3 Hiking Team donated 350 fruit tree seedlings, demonstrated tree-planting techniques and distributed festive season gift hampers to the Bunda Mountain community.
