The COMESA Competition Commission has called on journalists to enhance awareness regarding consumer rights across the COMESA region.
The appeal was made during the 8th COMESA Competition Commission Annual Sensitisation Workshop for business reporters, currently underway in Livingstone, Zambia.
Speaking on behalf of the CEO and Director for the COMESA Competition Commission, Dr Willard Mwemba, Boniface Makongo, Director Competition at the Commission said the workshop serves as a platform for media professionals and the organisation to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and best practices in competition enforcement. He also said it provides the opportunity to showcase COMESA’s achievements and initiatives.
According to Makongo, business reporters’ forums are instrumental in their collective work in protecting consumer rights as well as helping the citizenry understand the importance of competition.
Guest Speaker at the workshop, Dr George Lipimile, emphasised the roles of the media in promoting competition and consumer welfare since the media raises awareness on the issues of competition and regional integration.
The workshop has attracted journalists from over 10 countries in the COMESA region to enhance the quality of reporting on competition issues and promote regional integration in the region.
