Additional G2G fuel trucks enter Malawi

National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) says more trucks carrying Government-to-Government (G2G) petrol consignments are entering Malawi from the Port of Tanga in Tanzania.

Chief Executive Officer Clement Kanyama told MBC that the vessel carrying the consignment arrived at Tanga on 8 July 2025, and between 23 and 24 July, 28 million litres of petrol and 4.5 million litres of diesel were discharged. Authorities from Malawi and Tanzania are in talks to find ways of speeding up future fuel discharges.

Kanyama assured the public that deliveries of fuel procured under the G2G arrangement have already begun.arriving in the country, based on G2G fuel implementation plan, initially covering a period of 12 months.

He said Malawians should expect continued arrivals of more fuel trucks and rail wagons from both Tanga and Nacala in the coming days.

With regards to Tanga loadings, he further said as of 5 August 2025, 345 trucks equivalent to 13 million litres had been loaded in Tanga, and of these, 39 were set to begin their journey on 6 August, 181 were en route between Tanga and Chisumulu/ Songwe Borders, and 164 had already entered Malawi.

Kanyama also added that, under the G2G fuel import arrangement, Malawi is currently working with two state-owned companies, namely ADNOC of the United Arab Emirates and OQT of the Sultanate of Oman. He emphasised that all procedures outlined in the Liquid Fuels and Gas Act, signed into law by HE State President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in December 2024, were duly followed.

Kanyama said offloading at retail filling stations is being fast-tracked, with NOCMA depots operating extended hours.

Spot checks by MBC at several filling stations show that since Monday, trucks have been offloading between 30,000 and 39,000 litres of petrol.

Kanyama also noted that lower import premiums under the G2G arrangement will, in the short run, help reduce Malawi’s fuel import bill.

The country is currently using both the Port of Tanga in Tanzania and the Port of Nacala in Mozambique for G2G fuel imports, a move expected to further bring down transportation and eventually landing costs of petroleum products in the country.
