Morocco marks Green March, pledges support for Malawi’s development

Morocco’s Ambassador to Malawi, Abdulkader Naji, has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Government of Malawi in key areas of national development.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Green March observed annually on 6 November, Naji said Rabat remains ready to work with Malawi in sectors such as education, agriculture, infrastructure, and other initiatives aimed at driving the nation’s growth.

He also extended his congratulations to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on his victory in the 16 September 2025 elections, describing the outcome as a reflection of the will and confidence of the Malawian people.

Morocco commits to support Malawi – Naji

The Green March, first held in 1975, was a strategic and peaceful mass mobilisation organised by the Moroccan government to assert sovereignty over its southern provinces. Around 350,000 Moroccans carrying national flags and copies of the Qur’an entered the territory, calling for the integration of the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty.

The event remains a powerful symbol of national unity and pride, teaching future generations about what Moroccans regard as a peaceful struggle to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
