Government, through the Ministry of Labour, has cited shortage of resources for proper running of reformation and rehabilitation facilities as a major set back to combating child labour in the country.
According to Francis Kwenda, Chief Labour Officer in the Ministry of Labour, most facilities lack adequate resources for children withdrawn from child labour or harmful environments, making it hard for them to be totally reformed.
Kwenda disclosed this in Mzuzu on Tuesday.
He said in some facilities, it is impossible for children to have three meals a day.
He, however, praised the Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains in Africa (ACCEL Africa) programme, implemented by the International Labour Organisation.
The programme aims to accelerate the elimination of child labour through targeted actions in the cocoa, cotton, coffee, tea, and gold supply chains. It has been instrumental in reducing the challenges faced by children withdrawn from child labour.
