US eager to aid Malawi

The United States government has expressed commitment to assisting Malawi in combating food insecurity and propel the Agriculture, Tourism and Mining (ATM) strategy.

Joy Basu, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs, disclosed this to journalists in Lilongwe on Friday.

Basu, who oversees Economics and Regional Affairs across Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized that this would be carried out through the Feed the Future programme, which is one of the US government’s initiatives.

She pointed out that Malawi must harness the potential of its youthful populace in fostering a vibrant business environment to boost foreign currency earnings.

“I’m here to support Malawi in increasing its investment and export opportunities so that Malawi realizes its economic benefits in the Agriculture, Tourism and Mining sectors,” said Basu.

On Friday morning, the diplomat paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, where they discussed investment prospects in the agriculture and mining sectors.
