Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has shortlisted three Mighty Wanderers players for top honours at the 2024 Castel Challenge Cup individual awards.
These are Clement Nyondo, Isaac Kaliati and William Thole.
Nyondo has already secured the Top Goal Scorer Award, having netted 13 goals in the competition.
He is also in contention for the Player of the Tournament Award, competing against his teammate Kaliati and Mzuzu City Hammers goalkeeper, Chancy Mtete.
In the Goalkeeper of the Tournament category, Thole is shortlisted alongside Mtete and Panthers’ Precious Masamba.
Sports analysts have since hailed Wanderers’ dominance in the 2024 Castel Challenge Cup, noting that their 1-0 victory over Mzuzu City Hammers in December secured them the trophy and now places them in a strong position for individual accolades.
Football analyst Parry Chinyama said that the nominations highlight the team’s success but also sets expectations for the future.
“It is no surprise, given their dominance in the tournament. However, other teams will emulate them in the 2025 season, so they must perform even better,” Chinyama said.
Another analyst, Dan Chemis, noted that regardless of the final award results, the Nomads would draw motivation from the recognition going into the new season.
For the Discovery of the Tournament Award, Panther FC duo Precious Masamba and Geoffrey Sumani are nominated along with MMF Marine striker Isaac Kondowe.
The awards ceremony will be held on 21 February 2025 in Blantyre as part of FAM’s Annual Football Awards, along with the FDH Bank Cup Awards and sportsperson’s awards.
