Three men in custody for possession of endangered species

Police in Lilongwe have detained three men for possession of illegal stuff, including a live pangolin and four pieces of elephant ivory.

According to Hastings Chigalu, spokesperson for Lilongwe Police Station, the suspects, identified as Alick Akimu and Rebson Makumba, were apprehended following a tip-off regarding their attempt to sell the ivory at 6 Miles.

Another suspect, Gevinala Makanda, a 47-year-old businessman, was caught by detectives at Chinsapo Police Unit selling a live pangolin at Likuni Boys Secondary School ground.

Makanda will face charges related to the possession of listed endangered species.

The pangolin has been transferred to the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
