Malawi National Women’s Football Team have moved second in their group of the 2025 HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Championship after they severely scorched Lesotho 8-1 at Seshego Stadium on Saturday in South Africa.
This means Malawi and Angola both have three points, but Scorchers are superior with a better goal difference. Lesotho are bottom of the group with no points.
The two will lock horns on Tuesday, the final fixture, and the winner will play in the semi-finals as the best runner-up since South Africa has already qualified after they defeated Angola 2-0.
In the Scorchers game, Ireen Khumalo scored a brace, and Deborah Henry scored a hat-trick. Vanessa Chikupila added one before the break while Vutimbiko Mkandawawire and Olivia Phikani were on target in the second half.
Makhotso Moalosi struck Lesotho’s consolation.
Coach for Malawi, Lovemore Fazili, said the result made him happy because scoring many goals is exactly what they had been doing in training.
“During our training in the last two days, we were doing finishing, and I am not suprised that more players have scored today,” he said.
Fazili added that this means many Malawian players might be in the top scorers list at the end of the tournament.
This is Malawi’s second game after they lost their first 2-0 to South Africa.
