Parliament calls for transparency and accountability of govt resources

Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has found that several government ministries, departments and agencies continue to mismanage public resources.

Chairperson of the Committee, who is also a legislator for Zomba Chisi, Mark Botomani, made the remarks in Parliament while presenting the Auditor General’s report on the government’s accounts for the financial year ended March 31, 2022.

According to Botomani, the report revealed mismanagement of human resources and delayed pension and gratuity payments to retired officers cumulating for over six years.

Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mpenu Nkhoma, Eisenhower Mkaka, welcomed the report, saying all these issues are in the limelight because of the appointment of the Auditor General who is now able to report to Parliament.

The committee has however recommended the introduction of a centralized asset management system to track resource wastage and implementation of debt control measures to promote transparency and accountability in government.

The House has since adopted the report.
