Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says the SADC Model on National Emergency Telecommunications Plan (NETP) is a critical tool for improving emergency telecommunications and early warning systems in the region.
MACRA Director of Telecommunications, Edward Kauka made the remarks in Lilongwe during the workshop on NETP and Early Warning for All (EW4All) Awareness.
Kauka highlighted that the workshop seeks to build capacity of SADC countries on emergency telecommunications planning and knowledge sharing for effective implementation of the SADC Model.
He added that the country has been severely impacted by climate change which has led to devastating climatic shocks including cyclones.
SADC Senior Program officer for ICT, George Ah-Thew said there is a need for SADC member states to leverage digital technology to avert disasters and ensure robust ICT infrastructure preparedness and resilience.
