Mzuzu City has a female Deputy Mayor

Councillor Monica Simwaka for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has become the first Deputy Mayor for Mzuzu since the constitution of Malawi allowed the council to have Mayor and Deputy Mayor in 1970.

Simwaka is the Councillor for Katawa Ward and has won 10 votes from the 16 votes cast.

Her competitors were MCP Councillor for Mzilawaingwe Ward, Tonny Mwenitete, who received three votes and Hiwett Mkandawire, Councillor for UTM for Chiputula ward, who got three votes.

Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City, Bennex Mwamlima, said the combination of the two is a sign of a strong Tonse Alliance.
