Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has revealed that women, the youth and people with disabilities aspiring for parliamentary or local government seats in next year’s general elections will only be required to pay half the nomination fee.
MEC Chairperson Anabel Mtalimanja confirmed that women, youths and people with disabilities will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of K1.25 million for a parliamentary seat and K100,000 for a councillorship seat.
However, all presidential aspirants are required to pay a nomination fee of K10 million, according to MEC’s communique.
Currently, women empowerment groups in the country are campaigning for 50:50 representation of women in positions of leadership and decision making.
