A suspected criminal, identified as Allen M’bwana, was shot dead by police officers in the early hours of Saturday at Makawa in Mangochi after he had injured one officer while resisting arrest.

According to police records, M’bwana, an ex-convict, was also a well-known habitual criminal and had been wanted by Police in Mangochi and Liwonde in connection with a series of break-ins.

Acting on a tip-off from the community, officers from Makokola Police raided M’bwana’s residence.

“He [M’bwana] threw a homemade iron spear, which wounded one officer on the right arm,  before fleeing the scene,” said Amina Tepani Daudi, Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police Station.

According to Daudi, this prompted the officers to shoot in the air but one stray bullet hit M’bwana on his right leg.

Both M’bwana and the police officer were rushed to Mangochi District Hospital for medical attention.

The suspect succumbed to his injuries due to loss of blood while the officer is currently receiving treatment.
