Malawi Schools teams have won various awards at the just ended CAF African School Football Championship Qualifiers despite not getting the trophy.
For instance, the Young Flames’ Okester Kanyenda has won the Golden Boot accolade and the teams have also been awarded Fair Play.
The Junior Scorchers have qualified for the CAF African School Championship but the Young Flames have fallen short after being eliminated in the semifinal against South Africa.
Sports Analyst, Dan Chemis, said the teams deserve the accolades, considering that they also traveled a long way by road just to participate in the contest.
“The Fair Play award, yes we have received it with both hands, but what I expected most was a qualification for the boys because chances of them being roped in with bigger academies was great,” he said.
President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, said he will continue to support and celebrate the teams.
“We cannot be more proud of the determination, skill and heart our players have shown. This is only the beginning,” Haiya said.
