Local leaders should lead in hygienic practices — Chiponda

Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has urged local leaders to lead in the promotion of hygienic practices in their respective areas.

The minister made the remarks at Kwenengwe ADMARC Ground in Thyolo District during the celebration of open defecation-free achievement in T/A Bvumbwe’s area.

“Let us strive to make sure that we’re living in hygienic places. We can’t just be waiting for the government every time, some of these things can be handled at the household level and chiefs must make sure that all subjects abide by hygienic practices,” Chiponda said.

Before the project, six out of ten households in the area lacked toilets, but now almost every household has one.

TA Bvumbwe said now is the time to embark on a journey of civic education, focusing on teaching children the proper use of toilets.

The open defecation-free achievement has been attained with the help of Self Help Africa.
