The Roads Authority (RA) will towards the end of this year start mobilisation ahead of commencement of reconstruction of the Liwonde – Matawale Road.
According to RA’s Spokesperson, Portia Kajanga, the road works are set to be an upgrade on the current road, making it wider and more complete with safety features in the busy trading centres along the road.
The 47-kilometer stretch will be done with funding from the World Bank through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works
A unique feature of the road will be provision of two climbing lanes in the Machinga hills, where the normally slow moving trucks will have a special lane to allow the rest of traffic go through the stretch unhindered by the trucks. RA will also construct a weigh station at Mpilisi near Machinga Teachers Training College to safeguard the road from wear and tear created by overloaded trucks
According to Chief Road Transport Officer at the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services, Larry Chewere, some trucks have been evading the Chingeni Weighbridge by using the Mangochi Liwonde Road.
