Jean Sendeza, the Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare says the accountability programme for the elderly, known as AFFORD, has played a vital role in promoting the dignity of senior citizens.
She was speaking in Blantyre at a meeting which marked the end of the programme.
The AFFORD project; implemented in Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique and Ethiopia, has fostered regional cooperation in advocating for the rights of the elderly, according to Sendeza.
Andrew Kavala, the Executive Director for the Malawi Network of Elderly Persons (MANEPO) said the programme played a role in advocating for the passing of the Older Persons’ Bill in the country.
AFFORD programme, which commenced in 2017 with financial support from the Irish Aid, has formally concluded its operations.
