Elephant tramples woman to death

A 45-year-old woman, Volontina Yonasi, has been killed after being trampled by an elephant at Chilasamungo Village, located within the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Kasumbu in Dedza District.

According to Beatrice Jefita, spokesperson for Dedza Police, local residents noticed two elephants that had escaped from Thuma Forest Reserve grazing in a maize field.

One of the elephants charged towards Yonasi, causing her to fall while fleeing and allowing the wild animal to fatally injure her.

Jefita further stated that wildlife officials have safely guided the two elephants back to Thuma Forest Reserve.

Yonasi was a resident of Kaulalo Village in Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza, Dedza District.

Thuma Forest Reserve spans across Dedza, Salima, and Lilongwe, serving as a protected area for wildlife.
