Chakwera vetoes Cannabis Bill, signs five others into law

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has exercised his constitutional powers by withholding assent from the Cannabis Regulation Bill.

According to a statement signed by Presidential Press Secretary, Anthony Kasunda, the decision to withhold assent on the Cannabis Bill follows appeal from various stakeholders for further consultation and sensitisation on the bill.

Concurrently, Chakwera has signed five other bills into law, leveraging his constitutional mandate to promulgate legislation.

The enacted bills are:

The Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Bill
The NBS Bank PLC and National Bank of Malawi PLC (Lake Malawi Water Supply Project) Loan (Authorisation) Bill
The Electricity Bill
The Competition and Fair Trading Bill
The Older Persons Bill
