Balaka VSU records drop in criminal cases

Victim Support Unit (VSU) of Balaka Police Station says it has recorded 122 criminal cases and resolved marriage disputes this year, compared to 222 last year.

Officer In-charge for Balaka Police Phillip Dinala disclosed this during a third quarter Station Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in the district.

The meeting reviewed activities implemented by the station, crime registered and traffic management from July to September 2026 (Third Quarter).

Dinala said the district’s past three months, awareness meetings were conducted in villages such as Kaumphawi and Matola, including youth and school outreach meetings, to educate communities and students on crime prevention.

He also warned that those committing crimes will now be dealt, as people have been informed.

District Commissioner for Balaka Yusuf Bibu M’dala has commended Balaka Police Station for the security awareness meetings and crime prevention efforts conducted in the district.

He also described security as essential for maintaining peace and development.

M’dala said he was impressed with the direction security is taking and promised to explore the possibility of establishing a police unit near Portland Cement Company through Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He also called on banks to support security by purchasing working materials like reflective clothing for police forum members so that they can easily be identified.

The District Commissioner asked media houses to report on Police security efforts so communities can learn and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Station Executive Committee (SEC) Chairperson Christopher Piyo said the stakeholders need to work hand in hand with Police in financial support to maintaining security which include the purchase of whistles, reflectors and other working materials.

He urged senior chiefs to relay security messages to local chiefs so that security issues are discussed in community meetings.

Senior Chief Nsamala thanked police for the meeting and asked that when suspects are brought to police, they should be charged, taken to court and sentenced, saying community members are disappointed when they see suspects returning home without punishment.
