Zelifa Isaac’s life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when she developed a skin condition that eventually left her wheelchair-bound.
Her situation was further compounded when her husband abandoned her, leaving her to struggle to care for her two children and meet the family’s basic needs.
However, members of the MBC Zokonda Amayi Umodzi WhatsApp group have come to her aid with various items and financial support.
The women donated blankets, maize, cooking oil, soap, kitchen utensils and K500,000 in business capital.
Chairperson of Umodzi Zokonda Amayi Grouping, Jacquiline Mlaviwa, said the donation is part of the women’s commitment to supporting and empowering vulnerable people in society, especially those experiencing difficult circumstances. She has called on women to unite and support one another, as this is key in addressing challenges that people face in their communities.
Receiving the donation, Isaac said the support came at the right time as she continues to rebuild her life and improve her household’s welfare. She said the donation will help her meet some of her immediate needs and boost her business as she continues to recover.
The women have invested over K1.6 million in purchasing the donated items, including the K500,000 business capital.
The annual charity initiative, which started in 2016 through a WhatsApp group, has, over the years, supported vulnerable people across the country and contributed to the construction of houses for people in need.
