Team Malawi returns to action this evening at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in sports: boxing, netball and swimming.
Scorchers make their debut at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Nigeria.
Boxer, Elias Bonzo, is the man to watch as he faces Zambia’s Emmanuel Katema in the quarter-finals.
A victory would move Bonzo into the semi-finals and within reach of a medal.
Bonzo, who is in the men’s 65-kilogramme category, steps into the ring tonight after defeating Alston Ryan of Antigua and Barbuda via a Referee Stops Contest (RSC), followed by a unanimous 5-0 on points against Ewan Gracia of Gibraltar.
However, it is worth noting that his Zambian counterpart, Katema, has also had a strong run.
He began with a technical knockout win against Chamil Pathmasiri from Sri Lanka and a 4-0 points win against Leo Church from Scotland.
Malawi National Netball Team, the Queens, started on a low note at the Commonwealth Games after losses to South Africa (65-44) in the opening game and England (73-38) yesterday. Their best performance was a 64-48 thrashing of Northern Ireland on Sunday.
Tonight, they take on their toughest test yet against defending champions, Australia.
On the log table of Group A, the Queens are third with 2 points, while Australia leads the pack with 4 points, tied with South Africa and England, but separated by goals.
After the Australia game, Malawi will face Tonga on 30 July.
In swimming, Malawi banks on Luka Smit and Arsher Banda, who are competing in the men’s 50m butterfly tonight. Both are in Heat 3.
In the opener, Smit finished third in Heat 3 of the men’s 100m freestyle in 54.39 seconds, and Banda finished seventh in the same heat with a time of 1:00.15.
In the women’s category, Malawi has Zoe Rebello.
The first game saw her finish eighth in Heat 4 of the women’s 50m breaststroke, clocking 42.40 seconds.
Rebello will compete in the women’s 50m freestyle after being drawn in Heat 1.
Other sports categories of Judo and Athletics are yet to start.
Malawi is represented by 24 athletes in all categories, and it is the country’s 15th participation at the games.
Coach for the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, Lovemore Fazili, said his team has something special for the game, as the team will open their debut WAFCON tournament against defending champions and 10-time winners, Nigeria, the Super Falcons, tonight.
The game will be at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
