G2G vessel arrives at Nacara Port with 22 Million litres of diesel for Malawi

The fuel vessel MT Virgo, which first arrived at Tanga Port in Tanzania on July 8, 2025, carrying 50 million liters of petrol and diesel has arrived at the port of Nacara in Mozambique.

This is in contrast to social media claims that the Mt Virgo had been detained in Tanzania.

The vessel, which docked at the port of Nacara in the afternoon of Sunday 27 July 2025, after offloading 28 million litres at the Port of Tanga, is expected to offload 22 million litres of diesel which will be transported to Malawi via Nacara Nsanje-Marka railway line.

Malawi’s Government-to-Government (G2G) fuel deal has marked a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to stabilise its economy and address longstanding challenges in the energy sector.

The initiative, spearheaded by President Lazarus Chakwera, involves direct fuel purchases from source companies, eliminating intermediaries and reducing logistical inefficiencies.

This shipment is part of a wider plan to establish secure, corruption-free procurement channels and reduce reliance on intermediaries that have contributed to high costs and erratic supply in the past.

The G2G fuel deal is expected to have a positive impact on Malawi’s economy in several ways, including fuel cost saving and making sure the fuel reserves are fully stocked.

Another G2G consignment is expected to arrive possibly by mid August 2025.

Meanwhile, National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) officials are at Nacara to ensure a speedy process in the discharging of the fuel at the port.
