Zambian High Commissioner to Malawi, Panji Kaunda, has hailed the Malawi government for implementing irrigation scheme initiatives across the country, saying it is a way towards achieving food security and economic growth.
He said this on Tuesday at Linga Irrigation Scheme in the area of Senior Chief Fukamapiri Nkhata Bay during an appreciation tour of the irrigation scheme implementation strategies.
“We have heard so much about the successes of the irrigation schemes that the Malawi government has put in place countrywide. Since the inception of drought in both countries, both our governments are emphasising irrigation schemes for small-scale farmers and we thought of coming to learn as to what you are doing and replicate the same in Zambia,” Kaunda said.
Nkhata Bay Director of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, Raphael Mkisi, said that the visit by the High Commissioner is an indication that the fruits of irrigation schemes are out to the world and as a country, we are moving towards realization of MV2063.
Linga Irrigation scheme, which was commissioned in September 2023 by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has a gross storage capacity of 14 million cubic metres, with a length of 491metres targeting 4,250 farmers.
