Vice President Dr Michael Usi has assured Malawians, especially those affected by Cyclone Chido of continued government support.
The Vice President made the assurance on Tuesday in Zomba during the 2024 lean season maize distribution exercise at Nasawa Community Ground in Traditional Authority Mbidza.
Dr Usi said the government is aware of the numerous challenges that Malawians are facing, particularly hunger.
“For three consecutive years, we have been hit by cyclones that have made the country food insecure. These cyclones have also exposed people to various challenges. Government is aware of all your challenges and be assured of the support, ” Dr Usi said.
The veep, however, urged communities to plant more trees and avoid aimless cutting down of trees to avert some natural disasters.
He said some of the disasters that are persistently affecting the country are caused by human activities.
Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba said the department has enough food to distribute to affected communities.
“Despite the Malawi VulnerabilityAssessment Committee Report, we still feel people are in deer need of the support and this is why we are having another assessment so that we reach out to all vulnerable households, ” Kalemba explained.
District Commissioner for Zomba Reinghard Chavula said a total of 788 households were affected by Cyclone Chido and about 75,000 would be reached.
The DC said the district continues to face the wrath of climate change there is fear that more households would be affected this year.
