Unofficial results for the local government by-election conducted by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in Chilaweni Ward, Blantyre Rural East Constituency show that independent candidate Maxwell Chipiliro Phiri is leading with 1,882 votes.
United Democratic Front candidate, Anthony Mitambo, is in the second slot with 635 votes. Ruben Lungu of the Democratic Progressive Party has received 467 votes.
People’s Development Party candidate, Ted Kaliati, has pulled 392 votes while independent candidate George Chiluma has managed 203 votes.
Malawi Congress Party candidate, Bernard Nteche, has obtained 142 votes. Lusungu Kasonya of the Leadership with Compassion Party has 54 votes, Mulira Bella of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party has 40 votes and Allan Chikomo of Umodzi Party is occupying the last slot with 32 votes.
The official announcement will be made by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) tomorrow.
