United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is lobbying for a review of the country’s adult literacy education curriculum to accommodate new ideas that align with the Malawi 2063 agenda.
UNESCO Malawi Commission representative, David Mulera told MBC Digital that the new curriculum should address funding issues and include entrepreneurship skills to equip learners to be self-dependent.
“The majority of people who attend adult literacy education are not skilled and they do not engage themselves in any meaningful income-generating activities. By incorporating entrepreneurship, we can help address such challenges,” said Mulera.
Currently, the adult illiteracy rate is estimated to be around 35 percent, with over 60 percent of the population being youth.
