UN supports 8 community-driven projects with K547 million

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have given over K547, million to eight organisations that are carrying out initiatives aimed at addressing environmental and developmental challenges.

UNDP and UNOPS have provided the grants under the Small Grants Programme, a Global Environment Facility (GEF) initiative, which is aimed at empowering communities to take action on global environmental challenges while enhancing livelihoods and well-being.

The Programme targets community-driven projects tackling issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, land rehabilitation and sustainable energy utilisation, contributing to Malawi’s Vision 2063 and global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The National Steering Committee (NSC) Chairperson, Dorothy Tembo-Nhlema, urged the grantees to use the funds for their intended purposes.

Nhlema insisted that the funds should be delivered within the stipulated durations and bring the required change to the communities.

Out of 93 proposals submitted, eight projects were considered for consideration.

Centre for Conflict Management and Women Development Affairs, Executive Director, Caroline Mvalo, said they intend to strengthen women’s knowledge and capacity in waste management.

UNDP Malawi Portfolio Manager Resilience and Sustainable Growth, Rabi Narayan Gaudo, said the Small Grants Programme is not just a financial transaction but also their shared vision of empowering communities, fostering innovation and driving sustainable change from the grassroots.

Other grantees are Lilongwe Wildlife Centre (Lilongwe), Green Vision Environmental Organisation (Rumphi), Kawjo Foundation (Nkhatabay), Tingathe Malawi (Lilongwe), Floresta (Nkhatabay), Church and Society Programme, Livingstonia Synod (Rumphi) and Media and Technology Society of the Youth (Nkhatabay).
