Member of Parliament (MP) for Likoma, Ashems Songwe, says he is impressed with the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programmes being implemented in Likoma District.
He was speaking during a Monitoring and Supervision exercise by the District Environmental Sub Committee (DESC) members which included the MP, Ward Councillor for Likoma and Village Headwoman for Chioko in Likoma.
He said the programmes are helping in climate change impact management, citing that lately, the heavy down pouring of rains has ended up causing damage to houses though such impacts are being managed.
District Commissioner (DC) for Likoma, Abubakar Nkhoma, thanked the MP and the Councillor for showing a keen interest in the programme.
Catchment Management Committee (CMC) member for Chioko area, John Mataka commended government for the project, saying it is alleviating challenges encountered in the past such as soil erosion, deforestation, gully erosions, among others.
“We used to encounter many challenges and they were threats to many households, some houses were at risk of being damaged, but all these issues have been controlled due to the program, we can see many changes, now we expecting to plant 5500 tree seedlings in Chioko area in the next phase,” said Mataka.
Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme is part of the Social Support for Resilient Livelihood Programme being funded by the World Bank and Multi Donor Trust Fund.
