President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says provision of piped water systems in rural areas is key to achieving the Malawi 2063 enabler number seven, which is to ensure
that there is improved water sources to rural communities.
President Chakwera was speaking in an interview after inspecting the construction of Thazima Gravity Piped Water Supply Scheme at Nyika National Park in Rumphi District.
The project, which is funded by Germany through KFW to the tune of about $5 million, started on 20 April 2023 and is expected to end on 30 June 2024.
Once completed, the piped water will benefit the current catchment population of 18,000 in the surrounding communities of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in Rumphi and Senior Chief Mpherembe in Mzimba District.
Dr Chakwera, who is later expected to officially open Rumphi, Chikwawa and Mchinji teachers’ training colleges, is accompanied by the First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera, Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima, former vice president Khumbo Kachali, Cabinet Ministers and other officials.
