Two children from Mwenipera Village in the area of Senior Chief Mwakaboko in Karonga District have drowned in Kyungu River.
Public Relations Officer for Karonga Police Station, Margret Msiska, confirmed receiving a report of the incident.
According to the Scout Association of Malawi Humanitarian Action Coordinator, Aaron Mwenelupembe, heavy rains caused flooding of the river, which swept away three children, killing two of them while the third was rescued.
“After we launched search and rescue operations, one body was found yesterday and the other was found today 1.5 kilometres from the bridge,” Mwenelupembe said.
The two have been identified as 6-year-old Anastazia Mbughi and 10-year-old Memory Kamunyowe and were taken to Karonga District Hospital.
Karonga has been experiencing heavy rainfall, with areas such as Kasantha recording 297.3 millimetres. The downpour has triggered flash floods, affecting households and businesses.
