The Tobacco Commission (TC) has pledged to boost the country’s annual tobacco production to 200 million kilogrammes in the next growing season.
The decision follows Malawi’s production of 140 million kilogrammes this year, falling short of the total demand of 190 million kilogrammes. The objective seeks to address the increasing international demand that Malawi currently struggles to meet.
Godfrey Chapola, TC’s Board Chairperson, expressed concern over tobacco smuggling to neighbouring countries by vendors emphasising that the malpractice deprives the country of the much needed foreign exchange.
