Eastern Region Taxi Chairperson, Harry Manjawira, has pleaded with fellow taxi drivers in Zomba to remain calm following the death of their colleague, Zakeyu Matekenya, who was shot dead by police on Sunday.
He was speaking on Monday at Zomba Central Hospital mortuary as the remains of late Matekenya were being collected.
The city was in commotion on Monday morning following the shooting incident.
“It is my plea to my fellow drivers to stay calm during this trying time, as we understand that this is not the end of our relationship with the police. There are more challenges ahead and we will still need their support,” Manjawira said.
He also said the police covered all the expenses for the funeral of the late Matekenya.
Eastern Region Police spokesperson, Patrick Musa, said they are doing their best to ensure that there is calm and order in the city.
Late Matekenya will be laid to rest today at his home village in Phalombe District and he is survived by a wife and a child.
