Six political parties adopt code of conduct

Six major political parties have signed a Code of Conduct for Political Parties to ensure gender-responsive political processes and violent free primary elections ahead of the 2025 tripartite elections.

Speaking after signing the code of conduct on behalf of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Jessie Kabwila, Publicity Secretary for the party said there is a need to remove all barriers that prevent women’s equal participation in the political space.

Kabwila underscored the need for collaboration between different parties to allow women to participate in politics.

She added that Malawi 2063 is clear on inclusivity hence the need for a gendered approach that empowers women to attain political positions and violent free space.

Director of legal affairs for the  Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Chipiliro Mpinganjira said DPP will make an extra effort to have women in elected positions.

“We have just had our convention and we put in position several women as well as adopting a new constitution which calls for gender equality and affirmations,” said Mpinganjira.

Centre for Multiparty Democracy Vice Chairperson, Ben Chakhame, urged political parties to ensure integrity in adhering to the code of conduct.

MCP, AFORD, DPP, PP,  UDF, and UTM are six political parties that have signed the Code of Conduct for Political Parties.
