Six people missing after canoe capsizes

Six people are missing after a canoe they were sailing in capsised when it was struck by a hippo at Chingondo, in the area of Traditional Authority N’gabu in Nsanje District.

Nsanje District Chairperson, Mike Kafalachi, said that the canoe had 11 people on board who were returning from the Malekeza side, where they had been engaged in farming activities.

Kafalachi mentioned that the accident occurred around 2 pm, and so far, five people have been rescued.

Meanwhile, police have rushed to the scene and are yet to provide further details about the incident.

Nsanje District Commissioner, Dominic Mwandira, confirmed that his office has been informed of the accident and has deployed a search and rescue team, along with a ranger, as the hippo is still posing a threat to those involved in the rescue efforts.
